The Farmers Rest

This is (or, rather, was) the Farmers Rest pub in Newcastle. Me and my mates spent quite a bit of time here while at University in the early 90s, until Marks & Spencers bought up the whole of Haymarket for their expansion (the gits!).

All of which left less good pubs in Newcastle (they got rid of the Barley Mow while I was there too). Allegedly it was a listed building and they weren't meant to pull it down, but I didn't say that. The Old Orleans they put up 'in its place' doesn't look up to much (not that I've seen fit to go in, out of principle!). Good ones, just my opinion obviously, still intact when I left included the Egypt Cottage, The Strawberry and The Queen's Arms. They've probably replaced these with 'fun pubs' by now too, mind...

The Hitcher's Guide to Newcastle has lots of good links and information about Newcastle, its pubs, and even Fenwicks' Window! It's also got a copy of my picture above, although wrongly credited to Mel (who I know, and she should be ashamed of herself!). Anyway, this page remains here in tribute to a place where I enjoyed spending time with my mates and spending a fair proportion of my Student Loans...
